A flat close, but PSU banks had a bad day

Sensex added 43 points & Nifty added 13, which sounds like nothing happened. Well, under that calm, PSU banks fell almost 2%, the rupee slipped past 95.30 & the results season kept sorting winners from losers. Here is the full read.

The Session

  • The index did nothing today & that is the honest summary. Sensex closed at 78,542, up 43 points, & Nifty at 24,584, up 13.
  • The morning had help from Asia, where the Nikkei rose 1.5%, but nobody wanted to carry big positions while the US & Iran argue over the Strait of Hormuz, the shipping lane that carries roughly a fifth of the world's oil.
  • Breadth tells you how undecided the market was: 2,225 stocks rose on the BSE & 2,226 fell. A coin flip.
  • PSU banks were the one clear loser, down almost 2% as a group, while private banks held the Bank Nifty together. IT & realty saw buying; autos joined banks on the selling side.
  • India VIX, the index that measures how much volatility traders expect, rose 1.4% to 12.33. That is still a low, calm reading.

Bottom Line

A market that finishes a coin-flip session flat while gold & the VIX tick up is a market buying insurance, not conviction. Until the Hormuz question resolves, expect the index to do little while results move individual stocks a lot. That is a stock-picker's tape, & today's 10% & 12% moves in opposite directions prove it.
