The Big Picture

  • A tepid open indicated, after a four-day winning streak ended. The Nifty snapped four straight sessions of gains on Tuesday, closing 0.36% lower at 23,329, with the Sensex down 330 points at 74,529 & IT the weakest large sector (Nifty IT -0.86%). This morning the GIFT Nifty, the Singapore-traded futures contract that signals the Indian open, was quoted around 23,339, down about 49 points from its own previous close & only a shade above the Nifty's closing level, pointing to a flat-to-slightly-negative start.
  • The two forces pulling in opposite directions. Supporting sentiment: oil keeps easing (Brent fell 1.5% Tuesday on signs of US-Iran de-escalation), the rupee has now strengthened five sessions running to 95.59, & the 10-year G-sec yield softened to 7.01%. Against that: the US rally has narrowed to AI names (the broad S&P 500 closed flat), & at home the primary market is absorbing enormous amounts of cash this week, which tends to pull liquidity from the secondary market.
  • Today's crowded calendar. Nine IPOs open for subscription today, three stocks list, & Elevate Campuses' Rs. 2,100 crore issue arrives with Rs. 945 crore already placed with anchor investors. The session's stock-specific attention will sit with Adani group names (SEBI settlement), Sapphire Foods (a very large GST show-cause notice) & the day's listings.
