P/E is on the last 12 months of profit (without one-off items when they are more than a quarter of pre-tax profit) & shows only for profitable companies. Banks, NBFCs & other lenders are valued on their books, so they sit in a group of their own, placed on P/B (latest BSE close ÷ book value per share on the latest balance sheet), with no read; insurers keep P/E. Profit growth is the last 12 months of earnings per share against the 12 months before (restated for splits & bonuses, without large one-offs), the same figure behind the sector's middle company on the Desk; one quarter's jump from a low base no longer moves it. Read: P/E divided by profit growth in %, with growth counted up to 100% (a P/E of 20 with profits up 40% gives 0.5). Up to 0.75 = low price for its growth, 1.5 or more = high, in between = in line. The thin mark on each P/E bar is the sector's middle P/E; very high figures fill the bar. Industries that usually stay cheap (paper, sugar, fertilisers, state-run oil, gas & coal, fuel refining & marketing, jute, print media) sit in their own group, outside the ranking. A map to study, not a list of what to buy.
