The Big Picture · a rate scare & an oil squeeze, on the same morning

  • What happened overnight. Wall Street fell for a fourth straight day (Dow -0.6%, S&P 500 -0.58%, Nasdaq -0.65%) after August producer-price data kept the annual pace at +5.4%, above the 5.3% expected. What is PPI? It is the Producer Price Index, inflation measured at factory & wholesale gates before it reaches consumers, & it tends to lead consumer inflation. The US 10-year Treasury yield settled around 4.95%, its highest since 2023, & traded near 5% in Asia this morning; futures now price roughly a 70% chance the Fed RAISES rates on September 15-16, a hike, not a cut.
  • The oil layer on top. Brent settled +6% at $107.63 & touched about $110 this morning before easing to ~$108. Iran-aligned Houthis seized Yemen's Mocha port, tanker attacks around Hormuz intensified, & Saudi Arabia told OPEC its output fell to the lowest since 1990. The two shocks feed each other: dearer oil keeps inflation prints high, which keeps central banks hiking, which raises yields, which prices equities lower.
  • What it means for today's session. GIFT Nifty at ~23,333 signals a gap-down of roughly 140-150 points against Thursday's Nifty close of 23,477.80. Asia is sharply lower (Nikkei -3%, Kospi -2.6%, ASX -1%). Thursday's Indian session was actually constructive, Sensex +138 points to 74,902.59 & Nifty +46 to 23,477.80, with banks up & midcaps down, but this morning's cues override that. Oil-sensitive names (OMCs, paints, aviation) face pressure; upstream producers & select exporters benefit from the same numbers.
  • Tonight is the real decision point. US August CPI lands at 6 PM IST, consensus +0.4% m/m & +3.4% y/y (core +0.4% & +2.4%). It is the last inflation reading before the Fed meets. A soft number could unwind the hike pricing quickly; a hot one entrenches it. Indian markets will react only on Monday, alongside India's own CPI due September 14.
