The Big Picture: oil & bond yields broke the market's morning rally, & the Fed decides tonight

  • Tuesday's session. The Nifty opened firm at 23,592.85, then fell all day to close exactly at its low: 23,118.60, down 1.19%, the lowest close since early April. The Sensex lost 777.94 points to 74,003.82. The damage was worse below the surface: the Nifty Midcap 150 fell 2.14% & the Smallcap 250 fell 2.44%. Investor wealth on the BSE shrank by about Rs. 9.35 lakh crore in one session. The India VIX, the index of expected volatility, rose 9.3% to 13.43.
  • The three causes. Brent crude went above $108 a barrel intraday after Saudi Arabia cancelled some export cargoes; the US 10-year Treasury yield crossed 5% for the first time since 2007; & the rupee fell to 95.96, its fifth straight decline. Each feeds the same fear: imported inflation & higher-for-longer interest rates. Foreign investors sold a net Rs. 2,978 crore of equities on Tuesday. The Sensex has now dropped more than 2,900 points, about 3.8%, in September.
  • The one green sector. Nifty IT rose 2.19%, the only sectoral index to finish higher, after leadership at OpenAI & Anthropic said AI development should be paced & controlled. Slower AI rollout is read as less displacement risk for Indian IT services, which have lost about a fifth of their value this year on exactly that fear.
  • The expiry-auction oddity. Tuesday was also weekly expiry, & the closing auction session briefly showed an indicative Nifty level near 22,879, about 460 points below where the index had traded, before settling 37 points under the options market's implied level. Ten in-the-money put strikes settled at prices implying a Nifty around 23,156. It is a mechanical quirk worth knowing about: settlement prices on expiry day are now set by an auction that can diverge from the traded index, & on Tuesday it did.
  • Today. GIFT Nifty around 23,210-23,225 points to a flat-to-tepid open. Asia is mixed (Nikkei slightly down, Kospi slightly up). The Fed's decision lands at 11:30 PM IST tonight: markets price a better-than-85% chance of the first US rate hike since 2023, to 3.75-4.00%. Thursday brings the Tata Sons board meeting, the NSE IPO opening & the RBI's first Rs. 50,000 crore bond-purchase tranche.
