The Big Picture

Two things set the tone this morning. First, US inflation came in hotter than expected (3.7% in September against 3.4% in August), & that revived talk of another Federal Reserve rate hike at the October 27-28 meeting. Wall Street fell, the S&P 500 by 1.11% & the Nasdaq by 1.88%, & Asia is falling much harder this morning, with Korea's KOSPI down around 7% & Japan's Nikkei down over 4% in early trade on a chip-stock sell-off. GIFT Nifty points to a weak open, around 46 points lower at 22,603.5 as of 8:20 AM.

Second, India's own inflation problem is now sitting in the wholesale numbers. Wholesale price inflation jumped to 11.39% in September from 9.92%, well above the ~10.2% that economists expected, with fuel & power prices up 25.85% in a year. When wholesale prices rise roughly twice as fast as retail prices (CPI was 5.54% in September), companies are absorbing costs they have not yet passed on, & that gap usually shows up in margins first.

On the corporate side, the biggest news is structural: the Cabinet has picked Fairfax as the buyer for 60.72% of IDBI Bank for Rs. 52,878 crore. Results season also delivered two quarters that each earned roughly half or more of a full year's profit (BHEL & MRPL), & Aegis Logistics agreed to buy a Dubai fuel-logistics business that is bigger than itself by revenue.

Indian markets ended Wednesday lower: the Nifty fell 0.44% to 22,622.70 & the Sensex 0.34% to 72,781.89. The rupee held up better, closing at 95.16 per dollar on Reserve Bank of India (RBI) support, while the 10-year government bond yield rose to 7.40%.
